Flowing at the intersections of embodied care, collective wellness and social justice

A movement on the journey to collective wellness

Traditionally, an apothecary was the name given to medical professionals who formulated and dispensed herbal medicine to their patients. In Sesa Mathlo Apothecary you’ll find initiatives that are co-created and designed to be healing balms that address the collective trauma caused by inequities.

Our Roots

Sesa Mathlo Apothecary is a space that supports personal, collective and social transformation through education, research and storytelling. Our services and programmes are informed by The Storytellers, a research project we conducted in 2018. One of the recommendations of project was the importance of creating initiatives and programmes that centre care, collective wellness and social justice. As we flow through the eternal waters of change, we need a space where our wellness and wellbeing aren't separate from the social justice action that is necessary in our societies.

Our Dream

We envision a world where we can collectively feel transformation in our bodies, in our relationships, in our communities, in our societies, policies and in our world. As we are witnessing the multiple and interlocking crises around us, Sesa Mathlo Apothecary is Makanaka Tuwe’s response and offering to how we tend to connection wounds on a personal, collective and societal level and contribute to inclusive and equitable realities. We are one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first hubs where social justice isn’t separate or removed from our wellness, it is the core.

The Well is our learning programme where we explore identity, race, culture, gender, and social politics rooted in collective wellness and embodied social justice. On our learning journeys we explore how these inter-weavings inform our present moment.

What The Well Alumni Is Saying

“My key takeaway from The Well has been the introduction to readings and literature I have never had access to prior and almost like going back to the whakapapa (roots) of the theory I knew strands of. I have also learnt more about body supremacy, which has re-shifted my worldview about intersectionality”.

— Meri H.

”After the last 10-weeks I've built awareness of things I hadn't noticed before and because of the language learnt in The Well, I'm able to express what is happening and question things. Thank you for creating a safe container of building and harnessing our power".

— Rachel T.

“The resources and excellently compiled content will help to continue the expansion in the work I do, I learnt a lot that I will continue to bring into my private practice and has really made me look outside my current information circles for other places to be resourced.”

— Kyrin B.
